It reached a scorching 43.8°C at Wild Deserts today, but it’s just the first taste of the season’s heat! Here in the Strzelecki Desert extended heatwaves are the norm during summer.

The plants and animals out here have evolved amazing adaptations to these temperature extremes, but to do so they live close to their physiological limits. Studies show many species cannot survive extended heatwaves over 45°C due to lethal dehydration or over-heating and suffer catastrophic mortality.

Extreme events are only going to become more frequent with climate change. Long-term climate change projections for this region indicate the average temperature will rise by over 2°C by the end of the 21st Century; increasing number of very hot days, extending droughts, and increasing the severity and magnitude of weather events.

By working to restore the lost components of this ecosystem, Wild Deserts aims to improve its health, resilience and adaptability, giving this unique environment the best chance at coping with future climate change.
